VELVET LAND

O AKCI A AUTORECH

V rámci výstavy Velvet Land představuje významná berlínská galerie Deschler, která nedávno oslavila 20. let svého trvání, v Art & Event Galerii Černá Labuť díla Holgera Bära, Jaye Marka Johnsona, Jörna Grothkoppa, Mariano Rinaldi Goñi a Tonyho Conwaye.

Výstava předkládá pět různých přístupů současného umění ke klasickým tématům: krajina, akty a portréty, které odráží a kriticky reflektují vnitřní svět člověka skrze vzrůstající digitalizaci.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION AND THE ARTISTS

The eminent German Art Gallery Deschler in cooperation with the Art & Event Gallery Černá Labuť presents a new exhibition: Velvet Land. You will have the chance to admire artworks of Holger Bär, Jay Mark Johnson, Jörn Grothkopp, Mariano Rinaldi Goñi and Tony Conway.

The aim of this exhibition is to demonstrate five new approaches to classic themes in the contemporary art: landscape, nude and portrait. Those approaches reflect and critically mirror the inner world of a human being throughout the increasing digitalisation. No matter if digital images are on screens of laptops or on Smartphones, they steadily occupy larger space in our day-to-day life and influence our perception of surroundings. Those images increasingly form habits of the audience and it affects the culturally conditioned horizons of our perception. Furthermore, it changes also our point of view on such themes as landscape, nude and portrait which idea was always very likely culturally effected.

By Holger Bär’s digital paintings there is the computer-generated creation in focus on one hand, on the other hand his artworks (oil or acrylic on canvas) refer to pointillism from late 19th century. Bär thinks of himself as a neo-pointillist. Technically it would be more accurate to see his “holograph” in his digital images that are rendered pixel by pixel that we know from digital screens. Bär’s well-known game with those associations and pictorial raster makes his artworks both visually and intellectually fascinating.

At first glance often misleading digital photography of Jay Mark Johnson is not resulting from reverse digital reworking. In order to understand his technique it is crucial to grasp the paradox of it as he employs modified camera whereas on the vertical axis retains its spatial dimension, but the horizontal axis is dedicated to the depiction of the passage of time. This leads to surrealistic effects in his artworks where familiar landscapes are shown from a different perspective. A remarkable effect of the digital recording process that combines an image where an inexistent reality is faked, on the contrary there is the reality pictured without any manipulation, however, in a way that is trying to manoeuvre us.

In artworks from Jörn Grothkopp we may recognise third way of view on the classical landscape theme. The change is caused by the radical simplification of his painting. He removed majority of details from his drawings and he reduced it to their basic structures. This leads to a more complex perception based in our experience that is combined to one relation structure, and its simplicity changes itself back to more complex perception of the true subject.

Artworks of the New Yorker artist, Tony Conway, are a combination of different techniques: digital photographs are processed on the computer. Throughout this method his artworks give us a sense of more abstract forms. Afterwards they are printed and combined with graphite drawings and acrylic colours on semi-transparent sheets of plastic. This process leaves a compact and three-dimensional effect that has an impact on us still so long thereafter.

Mysterious erotic paintings of mythical female figures are the main theme in artworks of the painter Mariano Rinaldi Goñi who was born in 1972 in Buenos Aires. His works provoke the excitement between the shaping and decomposition and that gives a strong dynamical effect to his paintings.
